Installation steps for Car GPS Tracker
GPS tracker installation
Before you start
Prepare these before installation.
- A mobile SIM card with a data plan and no PIN code.
- The device manual and its wire colors (they vary by model).
- The car’s electrical system: 12V for passenger cars and 24V for most heavy trucks.
- Decide whether you will install engine cut-off.
- The app or platform you will use for tracking.
- Basic tools: screwdriver, multimeter, insulating tape and cable ties.
Installation steps
These steps are for wired trackers. Wireless trackers are charged and attached with a magnet, and OBD trackers plug directly into the diagnostic port.
- Insert the SIM and power on
Insert the SIM card before installation and make sure the network and GPS LEDs light up.
- Choose a hidden location
Usually behind the dashboard or under the console, so the device stays hidden. Keep the device’s top facing the sky and not under heavy metal for a good GPS signal.
- Connect constant power and ground
Connect the power wire (usually red) to constant 12/24V after the fuse, and the ground wire (usually black) to the car body or a reliable ground. Check with a multimeter before connecting.
- Connect the ACC (ignition) wire
Connect the ACC wire to power that comes only with the ignition, so the device knows whether the car is running and produces operating reports.
- Install the engine cut-off relay (optional)
The relay is connected to the fuel pump or starter wire depending on the car, so you can cut the engine from the app. Most devices execute the cut-off only when the car is stopped or moving slowly, for safety.
- Secure and insulate the wiring
Insulate every connection well, tie the wires away from moving and hot parts, and refit the dashboard as it was.
- Set up the device on the platform
Add the device IMEI to the app or platform, set the APN and server if needed (via SMS or the platform), and enable the alerts you need.
- Test everything
Check the location on the map, the ignition on/off alerts, engine cut-off and restart while parked, and make sure the device updates its position while driving.
Mistakes to avoid
The most common causes of weak performance or a damaged unit.
- Connecting power before the fuse or without a fuse.
- Device under metal or upside down weakens the GPS signal.
- SIM card without a data plan or with a PIN code.
- Connecting the relay to the wrong wire causes starting problems.
- Loose wires or wires near hot or moving parts.
- Not testing the engine cut-off after installation.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install the tracker myself?
OBD and wireless trackers are easy to install yourself. Wired trackers and engine cut-off are best installed by a technician because of the electrical wiring.
Does the device drain the car battery?
Its consumption is very low, and most devices enter power-saving mode when the car is parked.
Where is the best place to hide the device?
Behind the dashboard or under the console, keeping its top facing the sky and not under metal.
Can engine cut-off stop the car while driving?
Most devices execute the cut-off command only when the car is stopped or moving slowly, depending on the model and settings.
What should I do after installation?
Download the app and sign in, test the alerts, and make sure the SIM data plan is renewed.
Want a reliable installation?
