GPS TRACKER GUIDE

Differences between GPS vehicle trackers

Wired or wireless? OBD or a tracker with engine cut-off? A simple guide to the differences between tracker types and how to choose the right one for your car or company fleet.

How does a GPS tracker work?

A tracker determines the car’s location from satellites (GPS) and sends it through a mobile SIM card with a data plan to a server or tracking platform, and you see the car on the map from an app on your phone or from a computer.

Trackers differ in their power source (from the car or an internal battery), installation method, extra features such as remote engine cut-off, alerts and reports, and the network generation they use (2G or 4G).

Types of GPS trackers

Each type has its ideal use.

Wired GPS Trackers

Connects to the car’s power and is installed hidden behind the dashboard.

  • Continuous real-time tracking while the car is running
  • Most support remote engine cut-off and restart
  • Speed, zone and power-cut alerts
  • Best for private cars and fleets

Wireless (magnetic) trackers

Runs on an internal battery with a magnet, with no wiring.

  • Installs in seconds and moves between vehicles
  • Battery life depends on how often location is reported
  • Suitable for hiding, shipments and equipment
  • Usually without engine cut-off
Wireless trackers →

OBD trackers

Plugs into the diagnostic (OBD) port under the steering wheel.

  • Install it yourself without a technician
  • Powered by the car
  • Easy to reach and remove
  • Suitable for modern cars and rentals
OBD trackers →

Personal & child trackers

Small devices carried in a bag or pocket.

  • Monitoring children and the elderly
  • Some have an SOS button and calling
  • Battery needs regular charging
  • Not designed for vehicles
Personal trackers →

Car Tracking Cameras

Combine tracking with video recording.

  • Watch the road and the driver with audio and video
  • Useful in accidents and disputes
  • Suitable for transport and delivery fleets
  • Needs a larger data plan
Dashcam trackers →

Fleet management platforms

The software you use to follow all vehicles.

  • Route, stop and speed reports
  • Alerts for every vehicle
  • Multiple users for the company
  • Such as Tracksolid Pro

Network generation matters: 4G trackers send data faster and are future-ready, while 2G trackers depend on 2G networks remaining available. Ask which generation a device supports before buying.

How to choose the right tracker?

Answer these questions before you buy.

  • Will you use it for a private car, a company fleet, a shipment or a person?
  • Need remote engine cut-off? Choose a wired tracker that supports it.
  • Want installation with no technician or wiring? A wireless or OBD tracker fits.
  • Will the device stay hidden? Magnetic wireless trackers are harder to find.
  • Need reports and management for multiple vehicles? Choose a tracker that supports a fleet platform.
  • Make sure the tracker supports 4G and the SIM has a data plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does a tracker need a subscription?

The device needs a mobile SIM with a data plan to send its location, and it works on an app or tracking platform. Our team activates it and explains the app.

What is the difference between wired and wireless?

Wired trackers take power from the car and can cut the engine; wireless trackers use a battery and magnet and are easier to install and hide, but need charging or battery replacement.

Can I cut the engine from my phone?

Yes, on most wired trackers installed with a cut-off relay; it is usually not available on wireless and OBD trackers.

How accurate is the tracking?

GPS locates the vehicle very accurately in open areas; accuracy drops inside closed garages and tunnels.

Do trackers work in all governorates?

Yes, as long as there is coverage for the mobile network on the SIM.
